Gentleman and Whippet

A large framed oil-on-canvas portrait of a distinguished English gentleman and his whippet. A stencil on the reverse of the canvas identifies the canvas supplier as Charles Roberson, 51 Long Acre, London. The National Portrait Gallery provides a resource for identifying British artists suppliers. Per their database, "Charles Roberson & Co" began operations at that location in 1840, after splitting with a business partner and trading under a new name. The business relocated to 99 Long Acre in 1853. The frame is newer, and the painting exhibits stretcher marks and some losses.
